Did you change your pet's name when you adopted them?

If so, did they learn their new name and like it. Or did it just confuse them?

Did you change your pet's name when you adopted them?
Yeah you can change it! I have seen people on Animal Planet change their adopted pets name all the time! And They never have bad luck either. But sometimes i change my stuffed animals names because some are bad names!!! But the pet's name is probably use to people calling him or her that! unless its a puppy! they probably wouldn't remember their old name! Well i hope you pick a good name!
Reply:I had 2 horses and they didn't respond to anything but the names they already had, which I didn't particularly care for, but I kept them the same anyway.

On the other hand, I had 2 dogs as a kid which we got as family pets when they were puppies. It was nice to be able to call them whatever we liked. It was funny, but we eventually gave them little nicknames besides their names too. You know, like "poopy"--guess why.
Reply:We changed our cat's name when we got him. His name was Cary Grant but we call him Colbert after Stephen Colbert. He was just a kitten and we say his name so much that he wasn't confused at all. I think if you change the name when they are very young it isn't a big deal. But if it was an older pet then I would probably feel differently about changing its name all of a sudden.
Reply:No we didn't. We got our dog Peaches for free from a family who was moving and couldn't have her anymore and we didn't change her name. I think it's too confusing because they already have to adjust to a new surrounding, and changing their name on top of that is too much i think.
Reply:Yes. Our pup was too young to bring home at the time, so we let the previous owner know that we wanted to call her Ruby instead of Spots. They respectfully started calling her by her new name so she'd get used to it.

I think the tone of voice will help them..they're quick learners.
Reply:yes. they were found on the road. so we chose their names. you will just have to say their name, then come. they are responding to you not the name anyway. they learn it quick.it doesnt bother them a bit. i have rescued many dogs from pounds and they are the best ones to get.
Reply:No we kept his name the same.Even if the pet may already have a name you can still give them a new one.I remeber when me and my sister changed our dog's name to 27.It didn't confuse him,but then we changed it back to Shaggie.
Reply:Yes, they learned it really easy. Then again, our dogs (we had) were dumped on our road and our neighbor was about o shoot them.... so we scrambled over there and told them they were our dogs... so we inherited them I guess.( I know! Talk about an insane neighbor!) But, I guess, they learn it pretty easily.
Reply:My mutt was "Snowflake." ICK. She's now Kaya. And one of my cats was called "Copa", his brother "Cabana." Can you get worse? He is now Avery, my "dignified" mushball.

: )
Reply:Nope. I got my Holly (my avatar) as a puppy, and Holly was always her name...she wasnt named before I got her.

She's the greatest dog in the world, though. And I'm not just saying that :)
Reply:No, I think it's bad luck to change their name - unless the name were really really bad, which I haven't had yet.

(There was one cat I gave a new name, because I didn't know at the time he had one already.)
Reply:No, I didn't, because when you do then they will most likely have an identity crisis and will not learn much discipline.. I suggest you don't....

Hope I helped!

Reply:Nope, we kept the name the same, though it seemed odd that he already had one since we bought him as a puppy.
