Can you change an adopted pet's name?

I am planning to adopt a cat for the new year. I am getting him/her from an animal shelter or animal rescue facility. I am adopting a young cat that is older than a kitten but not fully grown. Would it be okay to change the cat's name? I have already chosen names that I like.

Can you change an adopted pet's name?
i had that same problem when i got my dog

he was 2 yrs old when i got him and they nammed him "Omalley" so i decided to change it to just 'malley' i love that name and he is the best dog ever

so yea you can change the name
Reply:Yes, My BFF just got one and it's name was Poxie Ann. Now it's Holly. I think Poxie Ann is STUPID! ( lol). I don't think there's anything wrong with it!
Reply:You can certainly use any name you like and think appropriate for the kitty. It won't make a bit of difference to the kitty.
Reply:Sure you can change the name. Give it a little time, get to know the kitty and you'll find the perfect name for him/her.
Reply:Sure! If you are going the extra mile to adopt a homeless animal and give it good care, you deserve to name it anything you like. Good luck with your new kitty. I am also looking for another. My poor 17 y/o cat has been ill off and on for the past 2 years and made many, many trips to the vets, but I don't want to put her through much more. I don't think she will last until the end of the year. I adopted her at 12, but kept her given name.
Reply:I think its ok if you want to change the cat's name you would adopt.

That is like your love form to the cat.
Reply:Yes, you can but try to keep it similar to the original.
Reply:yeah definately

i got 3 cats from a rescue center and renamed all of them, two of them were 1or 1 1/2 years old.

they dont really recognise the name they recognise the sound and tone of voice, my cats all come when i call one of them or even a completely different name

god luck with your new cats

Reply:Absolutely. If the cat truly does answer to the name that it already has, it is still okay. Soon she will start to understand that when you call her the name you like it is what she is supposed to answer to. Cats are not as dumb as some people make them out to be....lol
Reply:We have only gotten animals from the shelter, and none of them have the same name they came from the shelter with. They pick names at random at the shelter just to identify the animal and they in no way match the animals personality....so we do not hesitate to change the name.
Reply:Absolutely...I just adopted my cat (she was about 6 months old) a month ago and her original owners named her "Samantha". We renamed her to "Jynx" and she seems ok with it. Most cats at that age adjust quickly.
Reply:Absolutely. They tend to put names to the animals for record keeping.

My rescue names all their animals, but we don't expect the new owners to keep the name if they don't want to. It's just a name to put on medical records %26amp; to identify the files, basically. Plus, something to call the animal while they're with us.
Reply:name him/her whatever..they will get used to their name. good luck!
Reply:Of course!! Name your pet whatever you want.
Reply:yeah u could but if the cat is use to be called by that name it might confuse the animals for a while
Reply:Sure. Cats don't answer to names any way.
Reply:Sure you can. I always kept their originals but alot of people change their names to what they like.
Reply:yes, you can change your cats name to anything you want, i did that with my last dog!
