Is it correct to use "his" or "her" instead of "it" with your pet's name?

Not preferred (though grammatically correct).

My dog's name is Sammy. It is always running around.

Do your want to refer to your pet as an "it"?

I would say "He". But I don't know if thats grammatically correct.
Reply:BUT I believe that, yes, it is grammatically correct. All my teachers say so. Who told you it's not?

A dog has a gender/sex and you only use "IT" if the gender/sex is undecided (like teacher...unless the writer would really specify that the teacher is a he/she) or if there is no gender/sex at all (as in a table). As for you, you know that your dog is a "he", so it's okay. And I'd rather treat my cat with a gender/sex because he really has one.

More importantly, you've given your pet a name (Sammy) so in that case, it is more preferable to use "his/he" or "her/she"... ^.^

Hope I helped. ^//^
Reply:I don't care if "it" is correct. I prefer to say "she" when referring to my dog, Maggie. She's a female and not an object.
Reply:You can say "he" if Sammy's a boy. "It" is used when you're not sure of the sex, I believe.

My cats are she's.
Reply:It is correct to say it either way, but if you know the sex it is less awkard to say 'him' or 'her'.
Reply:well if your asking if it is OK to call my dog an "It", most certainly not. My dogs are members of my family and should be addressed by their names or in reference to their gender.

If you do not know the gender, the vernacular of They would would as well.
