I have always given pets human names. I have had assorted pets named Ellen, Dexter, Brian, Tucker, etc. and I currently have Milo and Jane. When I meet someone and they tell me their animal's name is Boots or Whiskers or Tiger or Sugar it bothers me. It seems like a goofy nickname and that they are treating the animal like a toy rather than a living being. I think it creates the wrong aura in a human-pet relationship.
Does anyone else think it's disrespectful to give a pet a ridiculous name?
I love animals; but they are NOT human, Why humanize them? Give them proper animal names,(which our culture has developed) and quit making people out of them.
(True story??) An old hilbilly farmer, named Joshuah Pigg, had twin daughters, whom he named Ima Jean and Ura Mae. Ima Jean would always handle introductions, extending her hand, she'd say Hello, Ima Pigg, then gesture to her sister to speak and say, "Ura Pigg"
Or what about the man named "Ivan Odeur?" That one stinks!
Reply:Pets are not people. It is more disrespectful to people to give animals people names than it is to give pets nicknames.
I think just the opposite, that people are way too wrapped up in their pets--dressing them in clothes and feeding them at the table and letting them sleep in the bed, etc. etc.
They are animals--they were created to be outside and to live like animals, and serve useful purposes, such as cowherding or hunting or rodent control or something. To reduce them to groomed lapdogs is what is demeaning and disrespectful.
Reply:I'm not sure how much respect we have to show a creature that licks its ***. What kind of aura does that create in a human-pet relationship? Especially when they come lick their owner later?
But seriously, it's how the owner feels about the name (obviously the pet can't tell), and how the owner treats the pet (I'm thinking probably just as well if it's a Whiskers as if it's a Milo) that matters.
Reply:i honestly think pets are lucky that they can be named Oreo. I named my pet Bun Bun..... lol i don't have a problem with it as long as it's not pervish or offensive. Spanky, no, Sparky, maybe, Bun Bun already did (it was a bunny) My guinea pig's name is Rolo like the candy and she loves it. I know multiple people cats and dogs named Oreo and honestly, the pets don't care. It doesn't mean you love them any less, it doesn't mean they love you any less. If they look like an Oreo, why shouldn't they be named Oreo? I get where your coming from but I don't think a name defines the type of relationship you have with your pet. (unless it's pervish or offensive cuz that just shows they don't care) In my opinion, boots, whiskers, and tiger are cute names, once again doesn't define how you love them
Reply:I agree with you. Most of the pets I've had or have have human names. I agree that pets shouldn't have stupid names. One person that answered said having the name Tinker Bell would really stink. I do think that having names like Tinker Bell are disrespectful to the pet. I will admit, I named a fish Angel before. I was little. Now that I think about it though, there are people named Angel. Some people may say, "They're animals, not humans." In case those people didn't notice, in science, humans are considered a species of animal. If you call a pet Reese, than that is just disrespectful. Would you name your child Reese? I didn't think so. In my family, and in many families, pets are considered just like everyone else in the family. We consider our dog just like us. So what if she has paws instead of hands? Does it really say that she doesn't want respect? If an animal has gills instead of a nose, does that say we should give it a name someone that breathed with a nose would be offended by? If someone has fur instead of hair, does that really define whether they have feelings or not? Think about that.
Reply:no
!!!
it gets on my nerves when people give there pets human names actually
they are human names not pet names
pet names are suppose to be cute
its not disrespectful
your pets should be your little friend but not litterally a human friend.
to can't communicate with you they are there to give company and for you to love them
not for you to treat them like human babies
if thats what you want adopt or have a baby yourself
srry but thats just my opinion
Reply:They're just names mine are suziesaurus and dinomite. i have more but not as cool as name as those. And i hate to tell you they are pets and acctually i find it weird to name all my pets like humans. The only human name my pet has is moe and the owner before me named it and i thought it fit him. Name doesn't mean there bad owners.
Reply:no there i actually think it sounds weird to name pets human names. is Milo even a human name i have never met anyone with the name milo. cute pet names are well cute. like i have a cat named nike and i used to have a dog name rex. it isnt disrespecting pets. but i do think it is disrespectful when humans (usually celebs) name their children weird names.
Reply:What exactly defines a human name? They were all invented just like "pet" names. Is a name really that important, does it define you/your pet? Do you really think your pet is going to be offended by a certain name? I'm not denying that a pet is an important living being, but I'd let people name their pets whatever they want.
Reply:i have 3 cats and a dog and i can tell you that the animal don't care what you call it, but how you call it. one of my cats is know by mister poo poo and he comes when called, actually he knows that as his name and will no longer come to his real name as he does not associate the sound with him.
Reply:Wanna see some ridiculous names? Check out the "Baby Names" section of Y!A.
And keep in mind ... those are names that people are actually thinking of naming their CHILDREN!
For a pet? I don't think the same rules apply. A pet isn't going to suffer teasing on the playground or get beaten up after school because its name is unusual or cutesy.
But this is coming from someone who had a cat named "Spork" ... so don't take my word for it!
Reply:At best, a ridiculous name reflects on the human who gave it not on the animal. However, if the person loves and cares for the animal, it's a far better thing than a person who gives an animal a "respectful" name and mistreats it. Please get your priorities straight.
Reply:I've never seen a connection between "pet" type names and people treating their animals like toys. While I've never given my animals cutesy names, I don't see a problem with it.
Who said that human names aren't ridiculous? :P What makes a name ridiculous, anyway?
Reply:its fine too give pets ridiculos names as long as thhey care for it properly.
i have had. Ernie,Larry,Repunzel, roxy, riley, Speedy Gonzardos , Tarsh, Choo Choo, Roxy Jr, tiger, Curly Wirly, (Bob, Bop, Nipper) in bracket are crazy crabs. and lots more
Remember names are a name
Reply:I am ok with that. I am not so ok with people giving their kids ridiculous names (hear me celebs--Apple is not a name it's a fruit. Pilot Inspektor is not a name, it's grounds for CPS charges!)
Reply:We named the fish in the fish tank at work after people who used to work there.
But nah, I think as long as the names aren't mean, who cares? Tucker and Tiger probably sound nearly identical to a cat anyway.
Reply:i don't think it's ridiculous. giving pets cute little names like sugar, tiger, prissy, things like that suit pets really well.
I used to have a dog named hobo-boy
and lady-girl.
Reply:The names don't matter. I have a dog named Blue (we didn't name her, we got her already named), and she isn't any different than other dogs. It depends on the what the humans like honestly.
Reply:to each their own. What if you get a friend by the name of Jane, and you holler out, Jane come here a minute and your friend and your pet comes at the same time, how would you feel.
Reply:Lighten up Z. It's a pet, not a person. The cat or dog doesn't much care what you call them, just so your good to them and they have a full tummy.
Reply:I get what your saying but. I might have to disagree. they just want love no matter what you call them. I have a dog named sistter and some times i caller fweepy. so ya hoped i helped
Reply:names like whiskers, boots, etc like you named are fine with me. degrading names are disrespectful like if you named your pet shithead, but cutesy names are fine with me.
Reply:No, actually I find it more ridiculous for humans to have names like:- T-Bone, Lil' Scrappy, Dreddy Kruger, Chingy or Fabolous. Pets are sweet and goofy nicknames are endearing.
Reply:i don't think those names are too bad. i think it kinda sucks when people name a pet something long, and stupid.
ive seen pet names that are like a sentence.
Reply:i dont, but i deffiantly see your point after you've explained it, but people have always put their pets after humans, so maybe thats why thier names are never human names
Reply:Ya me 2. I also hate it when people give pets names like "Mr. Twinkle Pants" yes my friend named her dog that. or something like " Big Boy". UGH it just isn't right!
Reply:i totally agree with you. my pets are named Jasper, Emelia, Joe, and Mercutio. haha
Reply:yea that would suck to be a chiwawah but your personality is very tough and manly but your name is sprinkles or tinker bell that would suck
Reply:I think they shouldn't name their pet any diffrent then they would their child.
My dogs names are: Joey, Gideon, Rylie, and Cloe
Reply:you sound extreme about this, and dizzy, which is one of my pet names for my friends, who i think are dizzy
Reply:OMG Me too!!
I think its kind of mean to give animals stupid names!
And then when you say it, it just sound cheesy.
I thinks its kind of like abusing your animal because they will get made from of by all the other animals...haa.
But i really feel bad for them!
No one should name their pet Boots or Whiskers
Overall...Its mean, cheesy, and silly!!
